Description of Choquequirao Trek - 5 days

The Choquequirao trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering a path less traveled to one of Peru’s most magnificent—and still secluded—Inca treasures. Our adventure starts at the trailhead, where we step into a world of rugged beauty and tranquil wilderness, far from the crowds of more popular routes.

As we make our way through towering mountains and lush valleys, you’ll be mesmerized by the untamed scenery and vibrant ecosystems that drive us forward. The climb to Kuna de Oro tests our endurance, but the payoff is unparalleled: standing before Choquequirao, an ancient citadel so remote it escaped even the reach of the Spanish conquistadors.

Exploring its sacred plazas, mysterious terraces, and masterful stonework, you’ll sense the echoes of the past in this untouched sanctuary. This isn’t just a hike—it’s a pilgrimage into the heart of Inca civilization, a rare opportunity reserved for those who dare to take the road less traveled

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco > Cachora > Cocamasana > Rosalina Beach

Our adventure begins early—we’ll depart Cusco at 4:00 am, heading toward the village of Cachora. By around 7:30 am, we’ll arrive and enjoy a hearty breakfast before preparing our gear and loading the horses. Then, the real journey starts as we set off on foot.

After two hours of hiking, we’ll reach Capuliyoc (2,915 masl), where the trail descends to Coca Masana (2,330 masl). Here, the air grows warmer, and the landscape transforms, revealing new flora and fauna unique to this region.

The day’s trek culminates at Playa Rosalina (1,550 masl), nestled beside the roaring Apurímac River. This will be our home for the night—where we’ll set up camp, rest, and recharge for the adventures ahead.

  • Overnight: Playa Rosalina
  • Meals included: Lunch, dinner

Day 2: Rosalina > Choquequirao

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll set out on what many consider the most breathtaking stretch of the journey. Starting early, we’ll trek for about five hours through stunning landscapes.

Our first stop will be Raqaypata, nestled beside the Chunchullumayo River, where we’ll pause for a well-deserved lunch. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for vibrant orchids, wildflowers, and a dazzling array of birdlife.

From Raqaypata, the trail ascends to 3,035 masl as we make our way toward Choquequirao. After roughly two more hours of hiking, we’ll arrive at the legendary Inca citadel—just in time to witness the golden sunrise and, with luck, the majestic flight of Andean condors. We’ll set up camp near the ruins, where history and nature converge in an unforgettable setting.

  • Meals included: Breakasfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3: Choquequirao > Raqaypata

Today will be unforgettable as we fully immerse ourselves in the wonders of Choquequirao. We’ll explore its most significant sectors—the majestic temples, intricate agricultural terraces, strategic military zones, ancient astronomical observatories, and sacred ceremonial sites. Our expert guide will bring the ruins to life, sharing fascinating insights into their history and cultural significance.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to wander through the complex at your own pace, soaking in the mystical atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we’ll begin our return hike to Raqaypata, where we’ll set up camp under the stars.
